"Always defending the weak and the helpless. That's what I like about you. Predictable. And that's why we're gonna win. We know your move before you do. We know how you think!"
—The Arkham Knight to Batman

The Arkham Knight is a mysterious military villain who emerged in Gotham City and was the antithetical version of Batman. He wore a militaristic "Batsuit" and had an Arkham symbol on his chest. He formed an Alliance with Scarecrow and Deathstroke to transform Gotham into a city of fear and end the Dark Knight. He was revealed as Jason Todd, formerly Robin before the Joker's torture at Arkham Asylum, but later abandoned the Arkham Knight persona when he realized Batman's trust and became the vigilante known as Red Hood.

Incident Reports

Before Arkham Asylum Incident

The Arkham Knight was originally Jason Todd, the second person to take the mantle of Robin after Dick Grayson and before Tim Drake. He was thought to have been killed by the Joker. Jason had always possessed an explosive temper with numerous incidents of him going too far in his actions as Robin, despite his natural talents and aptitude under the Dark Knight's guidance, with hints in his behavior that he might one day kill instead of using restraint.

One day, according to a City Story, it was heavily implied that the Joker blew up a schoolhouse of children and that was the moment that Jason decided the Joker needed to die. Jason turned off his com link and tracer and tracked the Joker to an underground abandoned wing of Arkham Asylum. As Jason entered into the area, he was instantly trapped by Joker's Henchmen. Jason put up a fight but was overwhelmed, beaten, and knocked unconscious. Jason was held captive by the Joker who kept him alive, and tortured him physically and psychologically through the many "games" that he came up with. Those included showing Jason a photo of Tim Drake as Robin six months later, beating him with a crowbar, and branding his face with a branding iron shaped like the letter "J."

Joker breaking Jason

The Joker continued to torture Jason for over a year, and during this time, Batman continued desperately searching for him but with no success, he eventually gave up. Meanwhile, the Joker was successful in breaking Jason, and finally convinced him that Batman was the enemy. When the Joker recorded an interview with Jason showing that he had broken him (with Todd going so far as to almost reveal Batman's secret identity), the Joker then shot him in the chest and stated that he didn't like "tattletales". The video was sent to Batman who presumed that Jason was dead after he witnessed him being shot.

The Joker, thinking that Jason was dead, looked at his body, mocked him, and then left Jason's body to rot, never to return. Unknown to Joker or Batman, Jason survived the shot because his body armor protected him from the bullet. Jason regained consciousness, badly wounded, and snapped. After he believed that Batman would never kill the Joker willingly, despite the fact that he had murdered too many people, and feeling "abandoned and replaced with another Robin" by Batman, Jason broke psychologically. All he could think from that point was that Batman had to die.

Arkham Asylum Incident

Jason was in the asylum before Deathstroke helped him with his escape. Jason continued searching for a way to truly kill Batman. Jason then assembled his own private militia made up of soldiers, drone tanks, and helicopters. Jason trained them, taught them Batman's tricks, and how to adapt. He even trained some in martial arts and the weaknesses of Batman's Batsuit.

Arkham City Incident

The Arkham Knight was able to monitor the actions of Batman and everyone else involved with Arkham City. During the incident, it was revealed that the Arkham Knight had almost entered Arkham City during Protocol 10 to pull Batman out of the rubble, but backed off after seeing Catwoman approach to save him. The Arkham Knight revealed that he was going to save Batman and help him stop Protocol 10, as he wanted to be the one to kill him.

After Arkham City Incident

Days after the Joker's death, the Arkham Knight witnessed a brief encounter between Batman and the new Electrocutioner, who was quickly defeated. When Batman left, the Arkham Knight executed the would-be super criminal with a shotgun blast to the head. Later, in an audio tape, Joker announced his plans to blow up the walls of Arkham City and free all the trapped inmates. The Arkham Knight followed Batman to Arkham City to defuse the bombs. Batman investigated but couldn't find any bombs, he then realized that it was a ruse: Joker's real plan was to blow a big hole into the sewers allowing all inmates to escape through there. Batman found the bomb ready for pick up. Batman defeated the thugs guarding it as the Arkham Knight watched. Batman then tried to defuse the bomb, but it then started counting down from 5, detonated, and destroyed the building. Batman had triggered the final trap that his dead nemesis had left for him. Batman and the Arkham Knight survived. Jason located Batman in the rubble and wanting to kill Batman himself, attempted to save Batman, and risked exposure. Before Batman emerged from the rubble, the Arkham Knight discovered the remains of the Joker's Diary. Deciding that it would be useful to hold onto, he fled the scene before the emergency crews arrived. Batman remained unaware of his stalker's presence. A family later spotted him in an alleyway after setting fire to a pair of the Joker's former henchmen. When Tweedledie, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee were prevented from stealing Batman's new Batmobile and put in a holding facility, the Arkham Knight shot all three of them dead as well.

Before Arkham Knight Incident

Scarecrow's men

The Arkham Knight teams up with Scarecrow

The Arkham Knight eventually found Scarecrow after he killed his men as a demonstration of his skills, advised him on how to take revenge on Batman, stated that he had access to an army trained in Batman's techniques, and knew exactly what he feared. It was the Arkham Knight who specifically gave Scarecrow the plan to drive the citizens of Gotham out in order to bring the full forces of his army into the city unchecked and where exactly that Scarecrow could do the most damage. He also devised methods of testing Batman to the limit by committing a force of unmanned drones as he knew if they were manned and armed, Batman would hold back.

The Arkham Knight also wished to kill Batman for causing him great pain and suffering in the past. However, he wanted to kill Batman when he was at his most focused and giving it all to defeat him, hence devising methods which would force Batman to push himself further than ever before telling Scarecrow to put the word out to the Rogues' Gallery that if the plan was followed to the letter, then one of the villains would successfully able to bring down Batman after "pulling him in so many directions". This was shown in the death scenes where the Arkham Knight was disappointed with Batman's efforts or being very personal by pulling him towards his face and telling him to look him in the eye when he died. He also relayed some information to Scarecrow that regarded Batman's allies, namely the existence and identity of Oracle. He also accompanied Scarecrow when the latter gathered the top crime lords (Penguin, Harley Quinn, and Two-Face) to call in a truce to eliminate Batman, although he took offense at Two-Face's request for information on how to kill Batman due to viewing him as his prey. This, as well as his overall nature, also made him disliked by the crime lords, especially Penguin, although Two-Face insisted that they gave him a chance due to the Coin telling them to do so. At some point, the Arkham Knight confronted several of Penguin's Henchmen at the docks and murdered all but one of them, broke his arm, and proceeding to threaten him with a gun to the mouth, which the surviving thug then relayed to Penguin, which caused the latter to break his other arm in anger.

The Arkham Knight also reached out and hired those who had various reasons for wanting to kill Batman such as the highly skilled assassin and super-soldier, Deathstroke, to be a back up commander and consultant for the militia forces, and told the one-eyed assassin that he was the toughest combatant that Batman had ever gone up against, and who knew full well the reputation that Deathstroke had for hunting down and killing fellow warriors whom he respected.

Arkham Knight Incident

The Arkham Knight first made himself known to Batman at Ace Chemicals while Batman was searching for Scarecrow there and found the hostages. The Knight used an attack chopper to provide protection while Scarecrow finished perfecting his new toxin. The Knight abandoned it temporarily to face off with the Dark Knight while he was attempting to rescue the trapped workers, and instructed his men to aim at the less armored sections of Batman's Batsuit. As Batman attempted to leave with the last worker, the Knight forced a showdown between his chopper and the new Batmobile. Batman managed to overcome them and located Scarecrow who managed to escape from his clutches. In addition, the Arkham Knight orders "Operation Savior" to be put into effect by his militia and Drone Tanks/Aircraft, and orders his forces to "Wrap there hands tight around Gotham's throat within the hour."

The Knight kidnapped Oracle and brought her to Scarecrow as leverage in his plan to destroy Batman. Batman attempted to track Oracle, but the Arkham Knight outsmarted him and shot and injured him in his side by using a weak spot in his armor. Later, the Arkham Knight extracted the Cloudburst from Simon Stagg's Airship after Batman snuck aboard and dealt with Stagg and Scarecrow.

After taking the Cloudburst, the Knight ordered his army to retrieve Mr. Freeze's wife, Nora, at the freighter. If he failed, the Knight had other people to lead the campaign.

The Knight reveals himself to be the thought to be long-dead Jason Todd

The Arkham Knight then activated the Cloudburst, and flooded the city with Fear Toxin. Working together with Poison Ivy, Batman located and freed two ancient trees that could neutralize the toxin, which allowed Poison Ivy to heal and empower them. Batman then destroyed the Cloudburst, which allowed Poison Ivy and the trees to neutralize the toxin, thus saving Gotham from the Cloudburst, but lost her life. The Arkham Knight tried one more time to kill Batman with his personal excavator, and managed to trap him underground in the Batmobile. Batman was able to escape once again, but not before the Arkham Knight had admitted his role in revealing Oracle's location to Scarecrow. The Batmobile, on the other hand, was destroyed.

The Arkham Knight finally revealed his true identity when Batman attempted to rescue Commissioner Gordon from the HQ of the militia at a construction site. The Knight raised his helmet to show his face with the branded "J" that Joker had left on him during his torture. Jason revealed that during the torture, Joker had convinced him to hate Batman for giving up and abandoning him only after six months while Joker was showing him "tough love" and that it was Batman whom he should truly hate. Jason confronted Batman using his actual name, and demanded that he tell him how long he actually searched before he gave up on him. Batman attempted to explain that he watched the tape that Joker had sent to him of him killing Jason. The Knight bitterly yelled at Batman and told him that he only wanted Bruce dead, right before he engaged with Batman who managed to hit and damage a part of his helmet.

BATMAN™ ARKHAM KNIGHT 20150720221012

Rechristened as Red Hood, Jason saves Batman

However, Batman finally managed to get through to Jason after a long and difficult fight. After he finally realized that Batman had never wanted to abandon him, and was willing to help him after apologizing, Jason abandoned his persona and become a violent vigilante who was known as Red Hood. When Scarecrow trapped Batman at the Arkham Mansion, Jason arrived and freed him.

After Arkham Knight Incident

Some time following Batman's initiation of the the Knightfall Protocol, Jason restarted his career as a vigilante. Seeking to eliminate crime lord Black Mask, he attacked his thugs during an arms deal, then proceeded to eliminate his weapon storage unit's security detail. Interrogating a survivor for his location, Red Hood dueled Black Mask in person at his downtown office, proving victorious. However, instead of granting Sionis mercy, Todd kicked the mob boss out of a window to his death several stories below. Alluding to his personal hatred of the Joker, Red Hood told Sionis to greet the clown for him in hell.

Personality

The Arkham Knight seemed vengeful, but patient and calculating as well. He seemed to exploit opportunities as they were presented to him, such as discovering the Joker's diary or taking advantage of Batman's presence at Ace Chemicals to instruct his men to avoid aiming at the armored sections of his suit. He also seemed psychopathic, and displayed no regard for the "weak" that Batman protected, and was contemptuous of the Dark Knight's principles and mercilessly killed those he deemed deserving, such as the second Electrocutioner and remaining members of Joker's gang, in cold blood. When Scarecrow asked him why he hated Batman to such a degree, the Knight coldly responded that he could never understand. However, Jason became an emotional wreck by the time Batman had defeated him, evidently scarred by Joker's physical and emotional torture. This was made clear by several militia soldiers, who claimed that Todd was "crying" and screaming at Batman "like [he] had been going through a divorce" before his redemption. Owing to his emotional and psychological instability caused by Joker's torture of him, the Arkham Knight also was shown to change his emotions at random. This is best demonstrated during when he unveiled his true identity to Batman, where he calmly and somewhat sarcastically commented he was "hurt" that Batman couldn't give much of a response to his being Jason Todd, only to furiously shout at Batman to not lie to him in an erratic manner, then adopt the calm persona shortly afterwards when making clear he intends to kill Batman. This display of emotion drove him to realize his mentor's efforts to rescue him, a favor he returned by assisting Bruce in defeating Scarecrow. While he continued to ruthlessly kill criminals as Red Hood, Todd was ultimately driven by justice.

Appearance

The Arkham Knight donned a militaristic version of the Batsuit that mocked Batman's appearance. The inside of his helmet and the tactical visor that covered it gave him a heads up display of his troops throughout Gotham and the ears relayed his commands to his troops. The visor also appeared to mask his voice as his main means of concealing his identity. By using the Arkham symbol on his chest plate, he inflicted psychological warfare on Batman, which reminded him of the past Arkham events. The chest plate also acted as a countermeasure to the Batclaw. After he revealed his identity as Jason Todd before his final battle with Batman, he discarded his visor, and revealed a featureless, bowl-shaped helmet that glowed red. He continued to use it following his transition to Red Hood.

Panels on his upper arms and lower shins, and his chest plate glowed dark blue as the Knight, and when he discarded the visor, the under-helmet and aforementioned panels glowed red.

Attributes

  • Maximum Human Conditioning: Due to his training with Batman and further training after his supposed death, Jason achieved a physical and mental condition that was nigh-superhuman. Through special dieting plans, rigorous training, meditation techniques & exercise regimes, he had developed that strength, speed, metabolism, stamina, longevity, reflexes & agility that are at the near the limits of a super-soldier’s inhuman capabilities. By matching his former mentor in combat, he has proven that he is physically far superior to most Olympic athletes, just as Batman is.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Strength: Jason was extremely strong and was at peak human range, having been rigorously trained by Batman then further training from himself and Deathstroke to his very limit of strength. He could easily pin Batman down with one leg, punch him hard enough to send him rolling a few meters across an entire room, and even broke free of his stranglehold when Batman ambushed him near the militia's long-range missile launcher; feats that cannot be accomplished by an ordinary man. With one kick, he could break a locked high-strength steel door open and carried Barbara Gordon across his shoulder with absolutely no strain. Jason at the peak of his strength and using muscle control can easily tear metal structures, lift a full-grown man over his head with one hand and throw him several meters just like Batman and Nightwing.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Speed: Jason is immensely fast, with his speed he could catch-up or outrun moving vehicles, likely to always be first in running-races and have great reactions. His speed was at the highest limit of human potential. He was known to be slightly faster than Batman himself, likely due to Batman's immensely bulked up physique. Jason was shown to be fast enough to dodge the Batmobile’s riot suppressor rounds which move as fast as a bullet, and easily keep up with Batman in combat speed. His running speed is superior to Batman, but not quite enough to match Dick Grayson.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Durability: Jason’s muscles and bones are much harder/denser than normal humans due to his training as the second Robin, extended beatings from the Joker for a year, and his immense training after his “death”. His rigorously trained body is at the very peak of human durability, meaning he could take getting beaten by a thick metal baseball bat and it would break, regularly falling a couple of stories, getting shot in non-fatal areas of the physical body. Jason can possibly survive an entire building collapse and withstand beatings from untrained super-humans. He has shown feats of bodily resistance to the point that he took Batman’s full unrestrained attacks, and showed minor discomfort when the Joker beat him in the face with a metal crowbar.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Endurance: Jason's body possessed extraordinary metabolism, and, combined with his intense training as the second Robin, this further enhanced his tenacity, and gained physical endurance which could be considered near superhuman. Having survived a year of continuous and brutal torture at the hands of the Joker and ultimately surviving a gunshot in an extremely weakened state, Jason possessed a strong will, body, and mind. During his brutal ordeal with Joker, he learned to withstand relentless torture, and in turn, attained a massive amount of tolerance towards pain, physical or otherwise. Years later, Jason's rigorously retrained physique was immensely stronger than before.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Agility: Jason's agility was at peak human potential superior to even gold-medal-winning athletes and other highly trained professionals in the field of athletics. In his training as Robin, he had been taught acrobatics and gymnastics routines. He has shown an extremely high level of physical capabilities in Parkour and military obstacle training as shown when he could maintain balance on a high tree, climb and freely move about the complex environment of Gotham City. He retrained himself to be an even better gymnast and acrobat than Batman, but not quite good enough to match Nightwing.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Stamina: Jason’s highly trained and developed body eliminates the excessive build-up of fatigue-producing chemicals in his muscles, granting him near-superhuman levels of stamina and lung capacity. He could exert himself at peak capacity in all physical activities for hours without tiring or slowing down.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Reflexes: Jason’s advanced reactions were honed to the highest human limit, far better than normal humans, even though this ability was not classified as 'superhuman'. He could easily match Batman's own reflexes during their short fight, and even dodge bullets fired at him from Black Mask at point-blank range, while still reacting to simultaneous attacks.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Senses: Jason's natural five senses were at the highest caliber of human potential; making his sense of sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste extremely precise and accurate by human standard. He can concentrate his senses to see accurately from moderately far distances, acutely touching ink on a page, hear and distinguish small sounds, have smell capabilities like a primate, and tasting more accurately than normal humans. This makes him highly alert to danger and aware of the surroundings around him; this ability was not classified as 'superhuman'.
    • Nigh-Superhuman Healing/Metabolism: Jason could heal much more rapidly than a normal human athlete, which enables him to heal broken bones, torn muscles, several gunshot & knife wounds and other severe injuries within several days and most lesser injuries like cuts, scrapes and burns within hours. This is likely due to his greatly accelerated metabolism was further enhanced through his intense training and nutritionally-strict diet. He also ages slower than normal humans, though not to a 'superhuman' degree.
  • Master Strategist & Tactician: Having trained under Deathstroke, Jason possesses immense skills in military grade tactics, strategies and protocols. He has the disciplined mind of a true military commander with the strategic mind of Deathstroke. His tactical skills are equal to that of Batman, and has outsmarted him on multiple occasions.
  • Leadership: Jason has learnt how to lead an entire army with extreme charisma, intimidating techniques and the power of suggestion. He is also skilled enough to help his army adapt to the Batman's tactics and fighting styles.
  • Master Martial Artist: He has been rigorously trained by Batman in almost every form of hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship and other Ninjutsu-based abilities. His primary form of combat is a mixture of Aikido, Silat, Boxing, Savate, Ninjutsu, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and Krav Maga; though he has mastered other styles as well. After his "death" Jason was trained by Deathstroke, he later gave himself an even more rigorous training than Batman himself to become Batman's equal and possibly surpass the Dark Knight. Batman calls him a master of Martial Arts. Jason Todd is a highly skilled combatant trained by Batman. Although he was always more of a brawler as Robin, following his resurrection, he gained more training and demonstrated himself to be far more skilled than before.
  • Genius-Level Intelligence: After being adopted by Bruce, Jason received excellent education and rigorous mental training from private tutors and Bruce, thus has deep knowledge in many subjects including Science, Math, Medicine, Geography, Criminology, World History and English. Due to being heavily tutored by Bruce and further training after his ‘death’ his mind has been greatly enhanced through years of mental training. Like Batman he has perfect recall, accelerated learning aptitude, eidetic memory, and photographic memory.
  • Master Marksman: He has shown a remarkable proficiency with firearms as well as other military-grade technologies and weaponry. He also has a unique pair of pistols which turn into a powerful sniper rifle. He is also a deadly in the art of marksmanship which enhanced his ability not only with firearms, but throwable weapons too; such as knives and shuriken. His accuracy was at the peak of human perfection and potential his precision mastery was high enough to allow him to shoot a target as small as handcuffs without harming Bruce, and shoot Scarecrow’s pistol out of his hand without harming him also. Jason’s marksmanship is slightly superior to Batman’s and may be on par with Deadshot’s.
  • Master of Stealth, Infiltration, Sabotage, Espionage, and Escape Arts: Since his presumed death, Jason lived in complete anonymity that most of the people who knew him thought he was dead. As the Arkham Knight, he could freely move about Gotham City while remaining undetected by the highly vigilant Batman, and even managed to spy on the latter without Batman noticing. He was able to infiltrate the high security facility of Gotham city Central Holding and secretly assassinated Tweedle cousins, he was able to personally laid a successful ambush on Batman a feat that not even the most intelligent of Gotham City's criminals could accomplish. Jason was originally skilled in stealth when he was trained by Batman. He has further increased his Ninjutsu skills exponentially.
  • Resources: It has been stated by Cash and many other characters, that the Arkham Knight has an almost limitless amount of funding and resources as well as a huge arsenal of militaristic weaponry, militaristic vehicles, high-tech drones, militaristic combat gadgetry and many other advanced technologies. It is, however, unknown where or when he obtained such resources, though it is assumed that the Arkham Knight's Militia gained funding from their mercenary work.

Trivia

  • The following is a list of people the Arkham Knight has murdered:
  • In the Baman: Arkham Knight Genesis comic, it is revealed that Jason's body armor was what protected him from the bullet shot by Joker.
  • A closeup on the Arkham Knight's visors, there were holographic numbers. There also seemed to be a map of Gotham City on the visor as well. His suit was also equipped with many of Batman's gadgets, including the Batclaw and possibly some sort of jammer.
  • Before release, Arkham Knight was said to be an original character. This is seen as a lie by most since while the Arkham Knight is a new persona, Jason Todd (the actual character) is not a new character.
  • Why Jason chose the name "The Arkham Knight" was unknown, but it was most likely connected either to the fact that he was tortured in an abandoned wing in Arkham Asylum, or as a way to taunt Batman by reminding him of his losses during the events of Arkham Origins, Arkham Origins Blackgate, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.
    • In the tie-in comic, Arkham Knight - Genesis, the name came from Harley Quinn.
  • The Arkham Knight was the second major antagonist to be voiced by Troy Baker, the first being the Joker in Arkham Origins, Arkham Origins Blackgate, Batgirl: A Matter of Family, and Assault on Arkham as well as the second supporting antagonist, the first being Two-Face. Ironically, the Arkham Knight, as Jason Todd/the second Robin, had also been tortured and broken by the Joker earlier, and the Arkham Knight's backstory was similar to that of Two-Face (being once one of Batman's allies, until a tragic incident where he was attacked and severely maimed for reasons implied to be trying to get at Batman and began hating his former ally due to believing that he had been sold out by him).
  • Troy Baker played all three Robins during the series, albeit his role as Nightwing was only grunts recorded for Tim.
  • Despite being extremely hostile to Batman to the degree of trying to kill him on sight, the Knight's audio tapes revealed that he still cared deeply for Oracle, which was evident when he angrily ordered Scarecrow away from Barbara and showed legitimate concern for her well being. The Knight also showed some temporary remorse as he asked how Alfred was doing, and told that anyone who touched him would die by his personal hand.
    • Interestingly, he never called Batman "Bruce" when any of his soldiers were present, possibly to protect Batman's identity.
  • Ironically, the Arkham Knight was the person who saved Batman from Scarecrow when he was trying to kill him throughout the entire game. Doubly ironic, was the fact that Scarecrow, who had denied the Knight the many opportunities to kill Batman, was just about to kill Batman by shooting him in the head.
  • The Arkham Knight's design seemed to have gone through several changes before release, since in earlier concept arts and trailers, he was depicted as having an upside down A along with his Arkham symbol. His character biography in-game still depicted this. He also was shown to wear black cargo pants, but in game they are actually red camouflage.
  • After the reveal, the Arkham Knight's helmet was added to the GCPD Lockup Evidence Room. Despite this, the mask was still in the location that it was dropped in the H.Q., possibly an oversight by the developers.
  • Jason Todd was the only member of Scarecrow's Alliance to redeem himself and never went to jail.
  • Even after he was unmasked, his character bio still claimed his identity was unknown. A similar error also happened on Jason Todd's Biography, who was listed as "Deceased" even after Batman learned of his survival.
  • Oddly, Jason called Barbara Gordon Oracle several times, despite the fact that she was still Batgirl during his time as Robin. He might have learned the new name while spying on Batman, however.
  • The Arkham Knight outfit for playable Jason won the community poll against Harley Quinn's Batgirl: A Matter of Family outfit, but a forum moderator confirmed that due to an overwhelming amount of votes for both sides, they both will be made available. The suits became available on December 2015.
  • In one of the trailers, the Arkham Knight shoots Batman at Ace Chemicals, but in the released game, he shoots Batman in a different location. Why Rocksteady changed this was unknown, but it's likely the trailer was edited so it wouldn't give out too many spoilers.
