Black Mask taunting Batman in Batman: Arkham Origins.

A Game Over is triggered when Batman or any playable character fails their main objective or dies.

Description

After a playable character fails, there is a pitch black surrounding with a certain villain appearing and taunting the playable character before they fade from the screen. On particular occasions, instead of a villain an ally appears mourning the character's death. In Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the player is given the options to try again or quit to menu. In Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Knight, after the death scene the game loads a previously saved checkpoint.

Possible Ways To Fail

In the series there are ways for the player's character to be killed. These deaths will result in a mission fail but the player can choose whether to retry or quit in Asylum and City while in Origins and Knight the player simply respawns without any options.

Additionally, in Asylum, Batman could die by falling into a bottomless pit and the player not using the grapple in time. In later games this no longer happens, except for a part in City where Batman is at the main chimney of the Sionis Steel Mill and falls off the rope.

Special Game Over sequences

Arkham Origins

  • If a playable character is spotted by a hostage taker and fails to rescue the hostage, the game will enter slow-motion as the camera shows the hostage taker killing said hostage.

Arkham Asylum

  • If Batman is spotted by Victor Zsasz while trying to save Mike in the Patient Pacification Chamber of Intensive Treatment, Zsasz will quickly turn around and press the detonator for Mike's electric chair shocking him to death.
  • If Batman remains in the Joker's Toxin for too long, then as he dies he can be heard laughing hysterically due to the effects of the gas.
  • If Batman is spotted in the office window by the henchmen guarding Dr. Young or only blows open one wall, a henchman with a shotgun will shoot Dr. Young with him saying "She's dead. Someone tell Joker!"
  • If Batman is spotted by Scarecrow during his Nightmares, Scarecrow's gaze will turn red as he raises his hand. Scarecrow then slams his hand on Batman, crushing him.
  • If Batman alerts Harley Quinn and/or her henchmen while trying to save Gordon inside the Experimental Chamber of the Medical Facility, Harley will prepare her assault rifle. Gordon then faces her and says "Do your worst" with Harley unloading her assault rifle at Gordon, killing him.
  • If Batman cuts the ropes of Louie Green or the other guard before cutting off the power for the electrified water below them while inside the Guard Room of the Penitentiary, one of them can be seen standing and screaming in agony as they are electrocuted to death. The screen then pans onto Harley who is standing inside the control area.
  • If Batman fails to escape the Guard Room in time and still has yet to free the guards, the gas is dispersed into the room, with Harley standing in the office saying "Mr. J is going to be so happy with me, I killed the Big Bad Bat!".
  • If Batman fails to decipher the locked door while inside the Guard Room before the gas is released, the screen shows the Joker Toxin canister dispersing the gas as recording of a laugh is heard.
  • If Batman spooks Zsasz while he has Dr. Young hostage or fails to save her in time in the Warden's Office of the Arkham Mansion, Zsasz will stab her off-screen. Joker then appears on the monitor in the office and says "Now that was unexpected. Who would have figured a deranged murderer would kill the poor little doctor?" before laughing.
  • If Batman alerts the guards of his presence by getting spotted or taking out any henchmen before the operator in the Aviary of the Botanical Gardens, the operator will be shown pulling the switch for the hanging cages. The doctors are then dropped into the dark pit below them to their deaths.
  • If Batman dies while being squeezed by Poison Ivy's plants, Batman will then be dragged into the ground. Batman is presumably eaten by Ivy's plants off-screen.

Arkham City

Normal

  • If any playable is spotted by a hostage taker, the game will enter a slow-motion as the camera focuses on the hostage and the hostage taker as it shows the hostage taker shooting said hostage.

Story

  • If Batman runs on the fragile ice and/or falls into the water before defeating Tiny in the Torture Chamber, Batman will be grabbed by Tiny and dragged underwater, possibly being eaten afterwards.
  • If Batman fails to defend himself against Tiny as he chews on Batman's raft, Batman will be grabbed by Tiny and dragged underwater.
  • If Batman loses the ninja while chasing her on the Arkham City rooftops, he will either say "I lost her!" or "She got away!" before the screen fades to black.

Catwoman's Story

  • If Catwoman is exposed to the poison gas in Ivy's lair for too long, she can be seen and heard loudly coughing and slowly collapsing to the floor as she dies.
  • If Catwoman gets spotted by the TYGER guards in the TYGER Confiscated Goods Vault before she picks the three keycards for the terminal, Hugo Strange will announce the guards to lock the vault down as they have an intruder.

Enigma Conundrum

  • If Batman chooses the wrong cup while trying to save Officer North in his Riddler Room, he can be shown being burned alive as the Riddler says "and the winner is...ME!" and North screams in agony.
  • If Batman stands in the way of any hostage while they are forced to walk with bombs planted on them while in Riddler's hideout, they will be blown up and killed.

Cold Call Killer

  • If Batman gets spotted by Zsasz in his hideout, Zsasz will sometimes be heard saying "Oh, there you are, Batman" before turning to his hostages, saying "I will cut you. I will bleed you and when I'm done, I cut myself and you will be immortalized in my flesh."

Shot in the Dark

  • If Batman fails to get to Jack Ryder in time, a loud gunshot will ring out across the city as Ryder is killed off-screen. But if he is in plain sight you can see Ryder getting shot and collapsing.
  • If Batman is hit by Deadshot while trying to sneak up on him, Deadshot is seen doing a pose before the game over occurs.

Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC

  • If Batman fails to defuse all the bombs planted throughout the Shipyard before the timer expires, a cutscene is shown with Gordon running towards the side of the building before being blown back the blast, with him saying "No" in denial.

Lockdown

  • If Batman fails to throw the Batarang at Harley Quinn before she reaches her hostage, she aims her revolver at the hostage and shoots her hostage off-screen.

Arkham Knight

City of Fear

  • If the Batmobile is destroyed and Batman is not inside the car, the camera will show the Batmobile getting blown to bits.
  • If Batman loses the APC driver's signal while chasing it in the beginning of the game, a GCPD dispatcher will say the APC got away.
  • If Batman moves too fast while moving the volatile canisters inside ACE Chemicals, the screen turns white as a boom is heard, meaning that Batman was killed in an explosion.
  • If Batman fails to escape ACE Chemicals in the Batmobile on time, the screen will turn white as a boom is heard, meaning Batman was killed in the explosion.
  • If Batman loses Gordon's signal while protecting him from the militia, the Militia commander will say that they captured Gordon. The Arkham Knight then says to bring Gordon to him.
  • If Batman loses the APC driver impersonating the Arkham Knight, Batman will say that the driver got away and he was their only chance of saving Oracle.
  • If Batman loses the North Refrigeration truck while trying to find Penguin's hideout, he will say that he lost his only lead on finding Oracle.
  • If Batman abandons Ivy's plants while they are under attack she can be heard screaming.
  • If Batman fails to insert the new energy core into the Batmobile while inside the Cloudburst in time, Batman will cough violently as he collapses onto the ground and coughs constantly, apparently dying from the effects of the gas.
  • If Batman either dies while protecting the GCPD Building from Scarecrow's attacks or leaves the GCPD area, the screen will cut to inside of the building as Oracle is on her computer, but suddenly looks at the elevator in shock as it chimes. The police guard who is near will turn around and scream and runs away as the elevator opens, with a Minigunner and a few soldiers appearing and the Minigunner opening fire on everyone in the room, killing everyone as soldiers spread out across the room.

A Friend in Need

  • If Batman counters too early against Hush while he holds Lucius Fox hostage, Batman will attempt to counter him but fails to which Hush shoots Lucius in the face.
  • If Batman fails to counter Hush when he has the gun aiming at Batman, Hush will shoot Batman in the face.

Campaign for Disarmament

  • If Batman is outside the bomb area for too long, the screen then turns white and a boom is heard as the bombs across Gotham are detonated.

Riddler's Revenge

  • If Catwoman uses the wrong key for her explosive collar it will begin to beep rapidly as it is about to explode, with Catwoman struggling with the collar and the Riddler making a remark. The collar explodes off-screen killing Catwoman.

Lamb to the Slaughter

  • If Batman fails to defeat Deacon Blackfire's acolytes, deactivate the electric fences and stop him before he sacrifices Jack Ryder, the Deacon will say "Your life on this Earth is over. An eternity of pain awaits!" as he prepares to stab Ryder with him saying "No. No!".

Gunrunner

  • If Batman does not perform the Dual Team Takedown move on Penguin as he holds Nightwing hostage in time, he will execute Nightwing with a shot to the head.

Two-Faced Bandit

  • If Batman allows Two-Face's men to steal all the cash in any of the banks, the henchmen board their garbage truck(s) as one detonates a small bomb near the entrance, with Batman running after it, only to be disoriented by the blast and stopped from following them.

Wonderland

  • If Batman fails to defuse the bombs planted on the police car(s) containing hostage(s) in time, a boom is heard as the screen turns white, meaning that both Batman and the potential hostage are killed by an explosion.
  • During the fight inside the book, if Batman fails to grapple over to the next page in time, Batman is seen bracing himself and the "White Rabbit" as they are both crushed by the page.
  • If Batman knocks out the White Rabbit on the final page, a Game Over scene will be shown with the unmasked brainwashed police officer questioning Batman before seemingly dying with Mad Hatter mocking Batman.

In From the Cold

  • If Batman fails to reach Freeze's research vessel in time a boom can be heard as the vessel is destroyed, presumably killing Freeze.

A Flip of a Coin DLC

  • If Robin does not Two-Face down in time before his coin falls back down into his hand in time, Two-Face will look at the coin (presumably showing the bad side) before executing Robin with a single shot from his pistol.

Catwoman's Revenge DLC

  • If Catwoman gets spotted by Riddler's guards before picking the three keycards for the terminal in the upper office, the guards will tell the others to lock the shop down as Catwoman is there.

Trivia

All games

  • Some Game Overs have the villain grabbing Batman, hitting him or in Killer Croc's case, eating him offscreen.

Arkham Origins

  • One of Deathstroke's Game Over screens has him point a gun at Batman (likely with the intent of shooting him), only for the scene to abruptly end.
  • One of Firefly's Game Over screens has him pressing the button on the detonator, likely blowing up the rest of the Gotham Pioneer Bridge and everyone in it offscreen. No explosion sound effect is heard, however, because, like Deathstroke, the scene ends before the bridge explodes.

Arkham Asylum

  • While attempting to save Dr. Young in the X-Ray Room, if the player uses any gadgets without being seen in the window beside the office door or blowing open one or both walls, a henchman will hear a noise and will say that someone is here, but another henchman reassures him that nobody is there. Afterward, they go back to watching Dr. Young.
  • The hostages in the Library do not count as killable hostages as even if Batman fails to save them before Joker ends his countdown, it turns out that he was joking about detonating his “gas”. It also turns out that his ”gas” that was being contained in a gift box in a giant boxing glove in-a-box.
  • If Batman accidentally cuts either Louie Green’s rope or the other guard’s rope while they are left hanging over electric pools while Batman is standing in front of Harley Quinn near the office window in the Guard Room, then as Harley Quinn taunts Batman and the dying guard, Batman can be seen idling like in normal gameplay.
  • If Batman fails to escape in time before Joker’s laughing gas is released while Harley Quinn is still in the office, Batman and the guards disappear as the gas is dispensed in the room, killing Batman and the guards. This is either because they are not meant to be seen dying because of the gas or this was possibly an oversight.
  • If Batman tosses a henchman over an edge from a high place or forces them either onto or into an active electric floor or door, game over won’t occur as it wouldn’t count as killing them, but rather knocking them out or if it is a deep pit, then the sound of water will be heard, despite no water being seen.

Arkham City

  • Turrets can only be found mounted on a wall in some secret areas within the perimeter wall. If they are not disrupted by using the Disruptor, they will shoot and damage the player. It also appears during the Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC. This can avoided by either using the Disruptor, which will overload and shut down or using Robin’s Bullet Shield, which will block the bullets from hitting the player. they are also what fires at Batman when he attempts to fly over the perimeter walls or the walls to the restricted area.
  • Some steam pipes are seen in Sionis Steel Mill, GCPD Building, and Harley Quinn’s Shipyard Base. These can damage the player and will continue if the player stays in the steam. These can be avoided by either finding a switch for the pipe, using the Freeze Blast to cover it with ice or using Robin’s Bullet Shield to cover the steam from harming the player.
  • Electric floors are mostly seen in secret areas within the perimeter wall, which can harm the player. If the player is stand right on top of the floor, it will deal tremendous damage and could quickly kill the player. The only way to avoid these is by either using the Line Launcher or finding the switch for the floor.
  • If the player gets killed by inmates that are not affiliated with any super-villains, the player will receive a Hugo Strange game over. However, after Hugo Strange dies at the climax of the game, the player will then receive a blank game over, showing only the mission failed sign and possibly the hints.
  • Even if the player gets killed by TYGER Guards during one of Riddler’s challenges, he/she will always receive a game over screen with Riddler despite the TYGER Guards working for Strange.
  • If Batman touches anything in the realm during the Demon Trials, he will die but does not receive a normal game over, instead respawning at the last tower he landed on before he died.
  • If Batman loses the ninja while chasing her, the player will receive a blank game over. The hints will say “Keep up with the ninja as she moves across the Arkham City rooftops. If you lose her, you will not be able to track down Ra’s Al Ghūl for a sample of his blood”.
  • Talia al Ghul’s game over lines are only heard on the PC version of Arkham City.
    • There is a possibility that perhaps, her lines could have been used for if Batman was to die during the Demon trials, which was likely cut because of the chances of dying in this part several times is moderately high.
  • If a hostage is taken by a thug, it is not possible to use gadgets on the hostage taker, but using any gadgets without being seen will result in the henchman telling the hero to back off or he will kill the hostage. The player can repeat this as many times as they want, but it is important to stay out of sight.
  • In the DLC, the special game over scene with the explosion of the building is reused from the ending cutscene of the DLC., the difference being that Batman and Harley Quinn are not shown escaping as both of them were killed in the ensuing blast.
  • This game introduces informants for the first time in the series.
    • However, the Riddler informants are not totally required to keep conscious, though the player will be unable to interrogate the informant for the locations of some of Riddler's secrets.
    • Harley Quinn's informant is the only one in the game that is required to keep conscious, since he is the only one who knows where the security cards are and if he is knocked unconscious, the game will fail due to Batman not figuring out how to get past the security door to the Shipyard.
  • Despite Robin saying to himself that he needs to hurry in order to save Batman from the sphere on the Joker monument, the player is not on a real time limit and can take as long as he wants.

Arkham City Lockdown

  • These game over scenes are the only game over scenes where the surroundings are not pitch black, unlike the other games.

Arkham Knight

  • Poison Ivy has two different mission failed screens but with the same lines. If her flowers are destroyed before the Cloudburst part of the story, she will appear healthy. If her plant is destroyed while protecting it in the churchyard while in the Cloudburst, she will appear sickly due to the strain the gas gives her.
  • Joker’s “Bats? Bats? BATS!” game over screen is a reference to the game over lines of the Metal Gear series.
  • If Batman fails to protect Gordon and allows him to be captured by the militia, Joker will appear healthy, despite in most of his game over scenes, he appears sickly.
  • Sometimes if the Batmobile is destroyed, Joker will sometimes say “Well, that’s what I get for betting it all on black.”
  • There are scenes where the villains will be shown touching the playable character’s body. For example, the: Arkham Knight will grab Batman’s face to look at him while he dies, Batman’s body is lightly kicked by a thug to confirm his death, and Robin is punched in the face by a Two-Face thug.
  • Alfred has his first game over lines in this game.
  • If the Batmobile is destroyed but Batman is not driving and he is moving around, he will freeze in place as the Batmobile is destroyed.
  • Unlike the previous Arkham games, there is no sign that says "Mission Failed". Instead, the screen is taken to the loading screen, where hints can be displayed.
  • In one of the Game Over screens, the Joker hallucination breaks the fourth wall by pointing out how everything has "gone dark" (in reference to the pitch-black background), and wondering if he and Batman are dying, only to wander around aimlessly due to the darkness.
  • If Batman fails to save Jack Ryder from Deacon Blackfire, there is no game over scene and instead, after it shows Deacon preparing to kill Jack Ryder, the screen takes the player to the loading screen.
  • In Firefly's side mission, even if the player lets him escape or fails to catch up with him, no game over occurs and instead, the player will have to wait until Firefly strikes another fire station.
  • Once again, like Arkham City, the player is not fully required to keep any informants conscious and no game over occurs if one is knocked unconscious. However, this will prevent the player from figuring out the locations of some of Riddler's secrets.
  • In the Catwoman DLC, her being spotted by the henchmen prematurely by Riddler's guards before receiving the three keycards is the same as the special game over in the TYGER Confiscated Goods Vault: both situations, being spotted before receiving the cards will result in a vault being permanently locked down, preventing Catwoman's entry.
  • The only time Batman would receive a game over for losing a North Refrigeration Truck is when he loses the very first truck while following it to Penguin's hideout. Otherwise, losing any other truck in the side mission "Gunrunner" will only result in Batman being unable to find the weapons cache and will have to wait until he gets intel from Nightwing about another truck.

Other

  • Arkham Origins Blackgate and Arkham VR are the only games to not include Game Over screens.
    • However, if the player provokes the Penguin Thugs holding Batman at gunpoint in Arkham VR, they will shoot him.
