Hiro Okamura, known primarily as Toyman, is a teenage inventor, fan of the Justice League and the second person to take on the Toyman identity after Winslow P. Schott. Toyman later becomes a member of the Support Squad, aiding the Suicide Squad in their fight against the Earth invading Brainiac.
Before Kill the Justice League Incident[]
A big fan of the Justice League, Hiro had followed their exploits and once entered an invention contest they held, winning first place with his shrink sphere. Said invention was put on display in the Hall of Justice.
Owing to juvenile naïveté, he did not consider the possible damage done to the environment resulting from the Justice League’s actions, including their battle with Starro the Conqueror, during which one tenth of the Amazon Rainforest was destroyed, and one occasion where a historical stump house was destroyed.
Hiro came to Metropolis for the Justice Day parade, but became trapped in the city when Brainiac began his invasion. He took to hiding with his robot companion for the next few weeks. At some point during Brainiac's invasion, Hiro got into contact with Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane and agreed to work with her, going under the codename "the Tinker" and Lane going by "Penwielder" whenever they would contact each other, unless they were alone.
Kill the Justice League Incident[]
After Lex Luthor's death at the hands of the brainwashed Flash, Hiro retrieved and fixed the anti-Flash device, with both himself and Lane agreeing to aid the Suicide Squad by giving them the device. However, Lois insisted that Hiro find a way to leave Metropolis after delivering the device, concerned for the young inventor. After noticing Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark going back and forth to the Hall of Justice Hiro hacked the A.R.G.U.S. security doors to get in. He politely inquired if they were trying to save the world, only to have Boomerang attempt to grab him on Amanda Waller's orders; thankfully the anti-Flash device sent Boomerang flying, as he was using tech that utilized the Speed Force. After explaining his intelligence and ability to invent, Hiro was welcomed onto the team by Waller. However, seemingly unknown to Hiro, Boomerang put a nanobomb in his head, claiming it was an initiation much to his excitement and to the annoyance of everyone else.
Hiro was given the quartermaster area across from Ivy's repurposed laboratory; which he quickly redecorated. He worked on tech to take down the members of the league, while upgrading the Squad's weapon effectiveness. Toyman however wasn't fooled by Boomerang's earlier claim and knew he had been injected with a bomb, and with the aid of his robot companion managed to defuse the nanobomb, sparing himself from having his life ended at a moment's notice, though he withheld this development from A.R.G.U.S. head staff and Amanda Waller out of fear of reprisal.
After the League clones all died, Toyman helped Flag set up missions to "Raise Hell", in order to infuriate Brainiac and make him waste his resources, which he called “Raising Heck”, as he was uncomfortable with using profanity, much to Rick Flag’s irritation.
Weeks later, Toyman finally got back in contact with Lois Lane, who had been worried after not hearing from Hiro all this time, with Toyman updating her on having been recruited to help the Suicide Squad as well as panicking Lane when he reveals the existence of the nanobomb in him he had defused, with Lois saying everything that happened after Toyman was supposed to just give the anti-Flash device and taking one selfie with the Justice Day statues wasn't part of the plan they agreed on. While Hiro insists he's fine and working hard to help save Metropolis Lois tells him it isn't up to Hiro to save the city as he's still young, despite this she asks Toyman to regularly check in with her again, Toyman promises to do this while also continuing to aid the Suicide Squad.
He later asked to meet with Lois Lane to aid her independent investigation into A.R.G.U.S’s involvement with the Metropolis Invasion. He gave her a pen drive containing voice recordings of Brainiac, and voiced his theory that the original Brainiac was fleeing from a future iteration of Brainiac who believes that the death of the original will save Colu from destruction, before she left, promising that she would listen to the recordings.
Ivy had attempted to “interview” Hiro, who answered awkwardly, though he did offer her some Justice League trading cards, complete with stats and trivia, to which Ivy feigned offense, which Toyman had taken literally, though she did reassure him that she had no issue with the cards themselves, though she did take offense to Hiro being a fan of the Justice League, and even made mention of Harley saying that his fanboying made him a “giant man-baby”, much to Hiro’s surprise. However, Hiro did not believe Ivy’s claims that the Justice League caused environmental damage, and pointed out that she would need proof to support her claim, to which she left.
Later, while Hiro was working, she literally shoved her “proof” in his face, startling him. She cited an incident from two years prior, when the Justice League supposedly caused destruction in the Amazon Rainforest, which was condemned by Tobias Manning and Bella Garten, among others. Hiro asked about Ivy’s source, to which she cites the Independent Biologists’ Digest, which Hiro is also a fan of. At this, Hiro is surprised to hear that they actually condemned the League’s actions at the time, though he still questioned her point, therefore he looked up her claims on the internet, and found that she was referring to the incident where Starro was attacking the Amazon Rainforest, to which Ivy trivialized the severity of the situation, considering climate chance “the real world destroyer”. He then pointed out that this was simply one instance where the Justice League made ecological missteps, to which Ivy mentioned that she had many more instances for him to find. Taking notice of the tablets next to Ivy, he asked about the tablets, to which she remarked that A.R.G.U.S. personnel leave them behind, therefore she collected them, turned them off and placed them in a pile before handing one with many tabs open to Hiro, for him to read. He found in one tab an article where the Justice League issued an apology in the wake of the destruction of a historic stump house, to which Toyman admits to stump houses being significant, but before he could go on, Ivy interrupted him and pointed out that the trees that the stumps were connected to were already dead, and that the Justice League supposedly destroyed the stump house. Toyman admitted that this was unjust, but he then pointed out that the Justice League were saving the world from a natural disaster, which Ivy also blamed on humanity, before instructing Toyman to read the next tab, which was an article about trees being replanted in Lake Michigan. After reading the headline, he pointed out that Amazo was the one at fault, to which Ivy blamed Amazo’s existence on the Justice League. Fed up with her complaining, Toyman lost his temper and attempted to justify the League’s actions, before conceding that the Justice League caused damage to plants while saving the world, to which Ivy smugly remarked “Glad you see things my way now.”.
Later, Toyman attempted to make amends with Ivy by apologizing for losing his temper and not believing Ivy’s claims, before offering environmentally friendly merchandise, such as a Wonder Woman planter, to which Ivy disgustedly refused, much to Toyman’s surprise. He pointed out that Wonder Woman came from an island of untouched nature, to which Ivy pointed out that Wonder Woman owned a private jet, and that Oenone, the first wife of Paris of Troy, was better at island botany, and cited the IBD’s interview with her, only for Toyman to refute Ivy’s claims, believing Wonder Woman’s jet to be magic, and then arguing that the Flash had a tree planting program, to which Ivy argued that he uprooted those trees with his speedy antics. Toyman then argued that the Flash was only saving people, including environmentalists, and assumed that the trees would want that, to which Ivy snapped that the trees believe it to be selfish, pointing out her ability to talk to plants. Toyman then asked her if she hated the individual league members despite their heroic actions to aid humanity, to which Ivy angrily badmouthed humanity, and Bruce Wayne, and asked where the green spaces were in Gotham City. Toyman attempted to point out that Gotham’s soil was not suited for planting, only for Ivy to interrupt Toyman and bellow for him to tell her where the green spaces were, to which Toyman gave her a random answer to placate her.
Later, Ivy attempted to pitch her plan to redeem the Justice League so that Toyman would stop complaining: when the league members heal, he would bring them to her testing area and get them to help her plant some things, to which Toyman deduced that this regarded Ivy’s poison garden idea, which Toyman reminded Ivy that Amanda Waller did not allow this idea, only for Ivy to remind him that he would be helping his “besties”. Presumably, she had lost interest and left.
Later, she pitched him a new plan: to “borrow” the Justice League for “science”, to which Toyman pointed out the potential breach of A.R.G.U.S. protocol. Ivy then explained that the science this plan would entail would be to see if her plants could best the Justice League, only for Toyman to point out that they were supposed to be recovering, only for Ivy to tell him that they can recover more when she is finished, only for Toyman to once again point out the potential breach of protocol. Ivy ignored this and explained that she wanted to use the League’s powers to aid all plants. Toyman questioned this idea, believing that plants should not have such powers, excepting the Green Lantern Medphyll. Ivy then explained that were this plan to work, the plants could repair themselves, retaliate, and potentially replace the Justice League, only for Toyman to nervously refuse. At this, Ivy inadvertently revealed that Toyman was aiding Amanda Waller in replacing the Justice League, unaware that he did not know the full implications of his involvement with A.R.G.U.S., much to his utter shock. After this, Ivy had lost interest and moved on.
After Brainiac was finally defeated and his invasion stopped for good, a disillusioned Toyman, along with the combined help of Hack and Lawless, deactivated all the nano-bombs that had been injected into everyone in Task-Force X, allowing the ones forced to (or in Hiro's case willingly) aid Waller to immediately escape the Hall of Justice much to her surprise and anger.
Codex[]
From the Files of Lex Luthor[]
Hiro Okamura, who calls himself “Toyman”, is what happens when great intelligence meets whimsy-poisoned imagination and an underdeveloped ego. Is he a brilliant scientist? Perhaps? But he applies his skills to the construction of what he straight-facedly called “gadgets” that offer some momentary, circumstantial use rather than any grander vision.
Toyman is a story in wasted potential were minds of his ilk capable of putting away childish things, we might have a better chance of fighting back against a force as powerful as Brainiac. Instead, we will meet the bringer of cataclysm with a wide-eyed gee-willikers awe and a fleet of sweetly useless robotic pets.
I have considered taking him on as an apprentice, but it will have to wait until the turn of the proverbial tide. If we get through this, I may gain the patience to make something out of this man-child.
Trivia[]
- The more well-known Winslow Schott version of Toyman is also confirmed to exist in this universe, seeing as there can be found many references to both Winslow Schott and his Toy factory.
- Amanda Waller and Rick Flag talk about Schott in their tapes.
- He is the only member of the Support Squad to not warrant the need of a nano bomb. Even someone as cold as Waller felt bad for Toyman, seeing as he was willing to help without the need for Boomerang to inject him with the bomb.
- Initially, Toyman is shown as the only character injected with the bomb not to be aware of it, believing what Boomerang had done was part of an "initiation" to join Task Force X. However, in the first "Squad Conversation: Classified Sources" audio logs brought into the game as part of the Season One DLC, Toyman reveals he had actually been aware of the bomb, and had managed to defuse it weeks before making contact with Lois Lane again, who he had been in contact with before aiding the Suicide Squad. This makes him the first known person injected with the nanobombs in the main Arkhamverse canon to find a way to defuse them.
- This incarnation of Toyman is shown being very polite to those around him, as such he's never shown swearing at any point while working as a Support Squad member.
- In addition to English, he also speaks Japanese.
- This incarnation of Toyman is based on the more heroic third Toyman in the comics also named Hiro Okamura, while in the comics the third Toyman actually is a hero as opposed to his two predecessors, in the Arkhamverse Hiro is a teenager that has good intentions and is a fan of and idolizes the Justice League, while ironically the original Toyman holds a grudge against and hates the Justice League, especially Superman.
- He was also the only member of the Support Squad unaware that Task Force X's mission in Metropolis was to kill the brainwashed members of the League, believing the Anti-Justice League tech would be used to stop the League members rather than allowing the Suicide Squad to kill them, it seems that he realized the team's true mission after the fact, but doesn't hold a grudge against them for this as he still lends his aid to the team, though he did not realize the depth of Waller’s plan to replace the Justice League until Ivy blurted it out to him during a heated argument, in reference to the common social theory that young people can be drawn into situations without realizing the full implications.
